Since 1928 the SLV Duisburg has been active as a competent and reliable partner for welding. Beside of education and training on the field of welding as well as company specific training, since 1999  distance learning courses for engineers, technicians and welding specialists have been developed. All offers on education are also conducted in English in Germany and abroad. At the Institute for New Joining Technologies consulting and services on the field of robot and laser technology as well as on micro plasma welding are being offered.  There is a comprehensive scope of performance from the development of processes for welding and cutting over the optimization of parameters up to the execution of pilot productions. Due to the excellent equipment of the laser area, all ranges of surface treatment,  laser beam welding and cutting up to the qualification of personnel can be offered. Having the most comprehensive fleet of equipment of all SLVs in Germany the entire scope of resistance welding is served. On the field of material science particularly the training of inspection personnel and the expertise on the investigation on damages on behalf of companies and justice is to be stated. Being one of the branches of the GSI the department quality assurance of the SLV is entrusted with the performance of the certification of shops in relation to the European Directive on Pressure Equipment.
