In the year 2002 the SLV Mannheim celebrated its 50-years anniversary and with 40 employees today it is a recognised service provider on the field of welding in the metropolitan region of the Rhein-Neckar. Furthermore, it offers education abroad with emphasis on the Near East, South East Asia and South America. The four standing legs are education and training, quality assurance (quality assurance with the certification of companies and construction supervision), materials engineering and materials processing with the respective resources concerning personnel and equipment.

The technical equipment of the SLV Mannheim for example comprises equipment for beam welding using the plasma, laser and electron beam as well as plastic welding working with equipment for flame cutting, plasma, laser and water beam cutting as a competence centre in the region.

On the field of materials engineering the SLV Mannheim in its accredited material laboratory has a scanning electron microscope with microprobe, a spark spectrometer of the latest generation, filmless radiography with a microfocus installation and testing equipment for plastics.
