In the year 2000 the SLV München was able to look back to 50 years of successfully operating. The SLV München is one of the largest of 10 institutes of the same type in Germany operating worldwide. The focuses of its activities are in education and training, testing and qualification of personnel on all fields of welding and testing as well as e.g. thermal spraying. The SLV performs qualification procedures not only according to German and international guidelines but also according to the specific ideas and demands of its customers.  These measures are conducted at the institute itself, in its external branch in Pentling near Regensburg but also directly at the customer´s premises. The department materials science is active on the field of consulting and expert opinion conducting among others non-destructive testing, inspections of components as well as special courses on metallography and is competence centre for stainless steel (Rostfrei Edelstahl). Besides of common activities extending particularly to southern European countries, the area of quality assurance has specialised on the field of corrosion protection. On the field of research and development activities are carried out both by order of customers and for projects financed by the public.

Main focuses are:
Friction welding, stud welding,  MSG-welding and soldering, material treatment by laser as well as robot technology.
