Representatives of companies from several Baltic countries congregated at the GT Corporation in Tallinn on December 15, 2014 in order to discuss the status of the training and qualification testing of underwater welders. Within the framework of FABTECH 2014 in Atlanta (Georgia, USA), a presentation, organised by the American Welding Society (AWS) and GSI‑SLV, on the subject of the future IWE / IWT training in the USA took place on November 11, 2014.
The speakers were Jeff Hufsey for AWS and Roger van den Brekel for GSI‑SLV.

During this presentation, it was illustrated to the listeners what the participants can expect and what prerequisites they must possess. Furthemore, the structure and sequence of this training were explained on the basis of the IIW guideline IAB‑252r1‑11.

With this motto, the specialist conference on the development of welding simulation took place at GSI SLV Duisburg on October 21, 2014. Although in the German language, over 80 participants from all over Europe and a few visitors from the Arab region congregated in Duisburg on the occasion of this conference.

In November 2014, IGZ Fügetechnik (Innovation and Founder Centre for Joining Technology ) at SLV Halle GmbH celebrated the tenth anniversary of its opening. This was a particular opportunity to reflect on the past ten years within the framework of a festive event at SLV Halle GmbH on November 19, 2014. In October 2014, 77 Egyptian vocational college teachers for welding technology took their preliminary qualification tests in the training centre called GEWC (German Egyptian Welding Center). The participants came from various provinces of Egypt. They were interviewed in small groups and all took written qualification tests relating to their knowledge.
Taking account of the origin and the performance, a total of 36 of the 77 people were selected for the further education which they completed in two groups.

During this event Christian Ahrens and Roger van den Brekel, both from GSI mbH, Duisburg, were representing DVS as well as GSI mbH as their national delegates.
This 2014 event will for sure be remembered as a historical milestone in the history of EWF.
The discussion about the competition rules inside the EWF – being raised again and again by the German delegates for a long time – did come to a sudden end after a long and ongoing lively debate in the EWF General Assembly Meeting.
Conclusion: the basic rules of EWF (and later also those of IIW) must be changed!
