The value added chain in the maritime industry encompasses not only the shipyards and the producers of components and systems but also various services in technical and business management fields. In this respect, the German shipbuilding industry earned a turnover of approx. € 18 billion per year with a total of approx. 2,800 companies and 80,000 employees.

The total turnovers of the German shipyard businesses with 50+ employees currently amount to approx. € 5 billion with an export proportion of nearly 75 %

After the consolidation, Germany has very widely based and great competence over the entire value added chain of shipbuilding and marine technology and therefore also has good chances of participating in the worldwide upturn in the maritime industry. At the same time, the German shipyards have improved their international competitive situation due to production  improvements and the concentration on "tailor-made" products.

However, this means that, because of the specialisation, particular know-how must be available in relation to the materials which are utilised and are to be processed (e.g. wood, plastic and metals such as aluminium and steel) and their processing by means of joining and cutting technology. Brazing, adhesive bonding, welding, thermal cutting with the laser as well as corrosion protection are particularly popular here. In this respect, the automation and mechanisation of recurring sequences and processes help to stabilise and improve the competitive situation.

During the implementation of company strategies, particular significance is attached to the correspondingly qualified and trained specialist personnel, from the welding engineer right up to the welding supervisor for automated installations for submerged arc welding, the corrosion protection inspector as well as correspondingly qualified testing supervisors.

GSI provides you with support and advice with regard to all questions for everything to do with the subjects of materials, joining processes, testing procedures, corrosion protection as well as personnel qualification and training.

All over the world and everything from one source.

We are looking forward to you and your questions.
